What to expect at your first girls-only skate session

Apr 1, 2026

If you've never been to a skatepark before — or if the idea of showing up somewhere new and trying something for the first time feels a bit daunting — this one's for you. Every Sunday morning at The Skate Farm, we run a girls-only session from 8:30 to 10am. It's one of the only sessions of its kind in Sussex, and it's become one of our favourites. Here's exactly what to expect when you walk through the door.

It's quieter than you think

One of the biggest surprises for first-timers is how calm it feels. This isn't a packed Saturday afternoon session with riders flying past in every direction. Girls-only is a smaller group, a more relaxed pace, and a completely different atmosphere to a standard open session. If you've ever felt put off by how intense skateparks can seem, this is the antidote.

Nobody's judging you

Everyone in the session is either a beginner or was one recently. The whole point of a girls-only session is that the usual skatepark pressure doesn't exist here. Nobody's watching to see if you fall. Nobody's waiting for you to get out of the way. You're all there for the same reason — to have a go, learn something new, and have fun doing it.

You don't have to skateboard

Skateboards, scooters, inline skates and quad skates are all welcome. If you're not sure which one to try, our coaches can help you figure out what suits you. Many of our regular girls-only riders actually came in on scooters or quads before eventually trying a skateboard — or they still ride them and love it.

It's for women too - not just young girls

The girls-only session isn't just for kids. Women of all ages come along — some in their 20's picking up skating for the first time, some in their 30's and 40's rediscovering something they loved as teenagers, and some who've never set foot on a board but always wanted to try. You don't need to keep up with anyone. You don't need to look like you know what you're doing. You just need to show up, and we'll take it from there.

There's a coach on hand

Every girls-only session has a coach present. They're not there to run a formal lesson — the session is open, not structured — but they're always available if you want a bit of guidance, want to try something new, or just need a confidence boost on the ramps. If it's your first time, just say so. They're very used to it.

What to bring

Comfortable clothes you can move in, and closed-toe shoes — trainers are perfect. Helmets are required and we have loaners available if you don't have one. Wrist guards and knee pads are a good idea for beginners and we have some you can borrow too. If you're not sure, just ask when you arrive.

And if you're really nervous?

Completely understandable. A quick one-to-one lesson before your first session is a brilliant way to take the edge off. Even 30 minutes with a coach can make the difference between feeling lost on the ramps and feeling like you belong there. You don't need to have it all figured out before you come.

The honest truth is that most people who come to their first girls-only session are a bit nervous walking in, and by the time they leave they're already thinking about coming back next Sunday. That's not a sales pitch — it's just what tends to happen.

Come and find out for yourself.
